About Florida State University

Florida State University, commonly referred to as simply Florida State or FSU, is a space-grant and sea-grant public university located in Tallahassee, which is the capital of the US state of Florida, and the county seat of Leon County, as well as the 133rd largest city in the country, having a population estimated at a number of nearly 172 000 inhabitants, during the 2008 census.

FSU traces its roots back in 1823, when the Territorial Legislature of Florida set a plan to create a system of higher education, being officially founded in 1947, when Florida State College for Women, the name by which the institution was known then, was changed to the current name of Florida State University.

FSU consists of 15 different colleges and 39 centers, institutions, facilities and labs, through which it offers its students over 300 programs of study and professional programs. It is a flagship university in the State University System of Florida, and as one of the state’s primary graduate research universities, FSU awards over 2,000 graduate and professional degrees, each year.

According to the Princeton review and USA Today, FSU is the 4th Best Value College of public universities in the United States, as well as 47th among public universities and 102nd overall in Tier 1 for National Universities, according to the U.S. News and World Report. The Academic Ranking of World Universities places the university among the top 200 among world universities, the top 100 American universities, as well as in the top 90 among universities in USA, while the Webometrics Ranking of World Universities places it on the 43rd place, among universities in USA and Canada, and on the 53rd place, among universities worldwide.

The athletic teams from FSU are known as Florida State Seminoles, who compete in the NCAA’s Division I (Bowl Subdivision for football) and in the Atlantic Coast Conference, in various sports, including basketball, baseball, football, golf, softball, tennis and several other sports. The Seminoles are best known for their achievements in baseball, football and track and field, in which they’ve experienced most of their victories, in the past years.
